Kuroe, a small town in Kainan City, Wakayama prefecture, has been one of major centers of Shikki (lacquer ware) production for hundreds of years. Our studio is located in this lovely town and has over 130 years of history.
While chemical paint lacquer on plastic containers has been developed and mass-production has been getting a main stream of most places of Urushi production, we elaborately produce each Urushi piece by hand using real Urushi and traditional techniques, such as makie, chositsu, kinma, raden.
Our mission is to inherit precious techniques of Urushi, which were developed over hundreds of years, and to give a new life to Urushi arts and crafts in our time.
